WA Highlight 1: Rottnest Island

One of my Western Australia trip highlights is certainly Rottnest Island. I visited this beautiful spot off the coast of Perth with my partner only a few days after landing in WA, and it immediately impressed us with its natural beauty. Only a thirty minutes ferry ride from the lovely town of Freemantle, made this an easy day-trip to explore beaches that seem unspoilt with their turquoise waters, and meet the local wildlife.

Rottnest Island is rich in unique flora and fauna both on land and at sea. We were lucky enough to spot some King’s Skinks on our first beach stop and plenty of birds throughout the day. However, the most exciting encounter was with the quokkas, the joyful inhabitants of this paradise who are so generous to host tourists daily. These little marsupials are a protected species mostly found in Rottnest Island, and can only be observed from a distance. They are happy to be seen, and spotting them was not difficult even in the hottest parts of the day.

We visited Rottnest Island in late March, which meant the temperatures were still high throughout the day. Despite this, cycling around was a fun and relaxed way to experience the island’s pristine scenery, easily access multiple beaches (or the lakes in the middle of the island), and make the day a little adventure!

Inspirational Rottnest Island: poem time

Rottnest Island triggered a multitude of sensations in me as being in such close contact with nature can do. This poem aims to bring to life a day-trip cycling around Rotto (as the locals call it) and the joy quokkas spark on everyone who meets them.
